blog

In this blog there will be thoughts and the progression of a university student studies his first year of post-production work. In this blog there will be the thinking about the editing of different types of a video media from Films and TV to adverts and YouTube videos because everything can be edited well it just depends on if people are willing to do so.

In the first week of doing any thought of post-production they got us straight on to Avid which for people that don’t know is the industry standard and what people use when making a film or TV programme. The first thought when he first saw it was that it looked a lot like Premier pro or final cut but when the student started to learn what was what and his thought that it was really different. When he started to learn about who the bin system works he thought that it was a good idea because it is then easier to have some sort of data management which then become easier to find and search for clips and sounds. The only problem that we had when doing the work during that week is that it was taking forever to get the files that allowed us to edit so we did not really learn that during that week.

FIFA 15 advert
The student thinks that this advert is very good from an editing standpoint of view because it is always cutting to movement but it does it really well. There is a lot of movement because it is a sports advert which makes it easy for them to cut to movement but it is extremely fast movement so that it would of have to of been very precise. The small problems that it has is that the lighting that is added during the editing stage can sometime be wrong by either being in the wrong position or it is too bright. He like that it is always keeping the speed of the advert high because of how much cuts and the speeds that the cuts happen because you are never really looking at any one shot for more than about 3 seconds which is keeping the tempo up.

In the students second week they had to use Avid again and had to edit some clips from the internet. When he first started putting the clips into the timeline the student thought that it was a little bit easier than the other editing programmes and a lot more fluid but when it came to adding a new video or audio layer he found that it could not just place the clip in the space above and that he had to do some clicking which he thought was a bit annoying but the student thought that he will be able to live with it. He found that when separating the audio from a clip it was a lot easier than the other software’s which was good. Also during this week he had to edit some clips that we had been giving and it was a series of the same event which was 16 seconds long and had to make it 40 seconds long which was difficult but he was able to do it. The way that he was able to do this was choose different parts of the clips and run thought the same event twice but also slowing clips down. The student also did not use any of the sound because it was not very good so he put music over the top of it.

Week three
This week in our lesson the students still were using avid and they were learning how to change the colour to make all the clips look the same and also make sure that we the audio level were correct as well. The student thought that he was now starting to enjoy avid a bit more which is good because it is a good software he just need to practice more on it. He thinks that if he starts to use it even more the student will understand more about the software which will allow improve quickly. They were also learning how to use some of the effects that avid has and some are really good because they are basic and look good whereas some of them look really cheesy and you would never use them unless you were trying to be like that.

Jurassic Park
This week the student watched the first Jurassic park film and he does love this film but trying to look at it from an editing point of view for the first time and it was difficult because to start off with the film had been remastered to be shown in 1080p on a blue ray which may in some way ruined the picture quality because some of it was a bit grainy and make it sometime very annoying. He thinks that it did cut to motion rather well and made sure that it stayed on the shot long enough to allow the tension in the scene to build up.  did notice a mistake in the editing and this is when one of the main characters is running towards something and they show a shot of her jumping over a log and then a bit later on you see her jump over the same log with the building being the same distance as the pervious shot. I think that any of the elements at are CGI are done really well because in the film they used both animatic and CGI I you cannot tell which is which because of good work they did.

Work four
This week they had to use the same that we used in the third week and had to make as best as we could a edit that looks good visual and sounds good that meant that we had to change the colour of most of the clips because none of the clips looked an good and we also had to make sure that the audio was not to loud or to quick and make sure that it all sound the same volume. The problem that the student found was that the way that he wanted to edit it was going to be difficult because he thought that he would be best have the entire clips on the timeline on top of each other and cut in timeline but it is not a very easy process to cut in the timeline because as far as I’m aware you can’t do what you would do in final cut and premier but you have but the cursor on the place you want to cut and that click on a different button on the screen and it will cut all of work. The final piece looked ok because the clip were not very good and the positioning of the camera was all wrong because some of the clips you could not even see the character on any of the camera positions.

I Robot
Again the same as Jurassic Park this is a film that the student really enjoy but looking at it from an editing point of view is difficult. The film was edited well because you are never looking at a shot for too long because they want the film to be as fasted pace as possible. The real only long shots that are in the film are the extreme long shot because normally they are trying to show something important.

Week 5
This week we had to edit a short documentary which I thought was rather fun and I really enjoyed doing the work. We had to me sure that we were not holding on shots to long and we had to improve as much of the lighting and audio as we felt necessary. I think that I did rather well when trying to edit it and when it came to watching it again the feedback that I received was good and the only points that were not to good were points which I had also picked out when watching it so it shows that I am at least recognising my mistakes.  When I was doing this work I was learning a lot about how I edit and what I should be changing to make myself a better editor.

Fallen Angels, a film by Wong Kar-Wai (trailer)
The trailer looks really bad quality but the only part to talk about is the pace that the video is showing because it is extremely fast pace with the amount of cuts and where the cut are placed. When there is an action scene is where the most of amount of cuts happens and the cuts happen about once every second or even faster than that because you can only just see what is happening. The reason why they director and editor would want the film to be such a fast pace would be that it make it seem like it is a good film and you don’t see the bad bits as much but it does work as a fast pace because of the cuts they use and the cuts to motion as well.

Chrome waves – light behind the shadow
This music is a good example of cutting to the beat of the music because it does it very well. The video cuts to certain beats which can sometimes means that the shoot last a bit longer than they should which is not a good thing of the pace of the video because the it is not a very slow song for it to work. The video itself is not very good because of the certain shoots that are used and the directing and acting but the only good bit is the cutting to the beat which still seems to not be as good as it could be. It also does not help that the music and lyrics itself and rubbish which makes it harder to cut and make a good pace of the video.

Point Break - Epic On-Foot Chase
This clip is really good for all the basic parts of editing because thought out the whole clip the editor is always cutting to motion and the editor is also cutting to the beat as well. This makes the edit very fast pace because the music is very fast and it is also a chase scene. The end of the clip it slows down a bit with the cuts because of what follows in the story and also the cuts between the eyes and face of the two characters is good. Overall this is a very well edited clip because of the fast pace, the cutting to motion and the cutting to the beat.

Transporter 3 chase scene
Like point break this chase scene also cuts to the music and to motion because it is cutting between the main character and inside the car that the characters is trying to get to. The only thing that this clip does differently to the other one is that it holds shoots longer if the character is doing a certain action like when he jumping the bike onto the lorry it holds the shoots longer to show that what he is doing it very impressive.

Gerry (Gus Van Sant) - 'a walk in the desert' scene
This is very boring and not interesting clip that shows no story or and emotion from the characters or the music. The clip has no cuts but the camera on follows the characters from the same distance and does not move in any angle to get a different perspective of what’s happening. If he was to watch this film and it got to that part of the film it would make anyone want to change what they were watching and watch to be honest anything else. He does not know how you could call this editing the only thing that really happens is the time change from what seems like night to day.

Bourne supremacy – car chase with kirill
Like the other two chase that have been talked about already this one is very similar because of the shoots used but in is like there is not music that effects the cuts as much and if were is it not noticeable. The shots that are used are more from in the cars than from the exterior of the cars because it is showing what actions the characters are doing within the cars. The shots are easy to cut to motion because of the shaky the camera was and all the movements the characters are doing within the shots.

Loop Loop
In this clip the editor has been really clever because the scene never cuts as far as your eyes are aware and it is all one long shot. The movement of the clips at the beginning of the video makes your eyes wondering if the shot are in 3D perspective or just on top of each other.  The music that is at the beginning works well with the clip because it is not fast paced and it not to loud so it does not distract you from the video itself.

Without you
This video is ok but some elements are really good and some are really bad because the sound at the beginning is really bad because there is not need to listen to the noise from the background. The way in which the edit blended the clips together to make it seem like there was only one clip was good but also it sometime ruins the shoot because there don’t look right. There is also no order when cutting the clips because most of the time there just cut and there is not idea why or what reason for the cuts because the cut just some out of thin air which ruins it.

Surfing video
For this work the students were given clips and they had to make a video using the music and make sure that it all work with the beat of the music and he thought that he did this well because all of the cuts work well with the music and certain parts of clips work well with the music like when he is jumping out of the water the music is a lot slower. The part that would be the best part to change would have been when he lands in the water from jumping in the air, it would have been better to cut it straight away instead of waiting for him to land and move forward because then there would not of been any water and you would always be able to see everything. Overall he thinks that it went rather well and that it would have gotten him a high mark if it was assessed.

Scene 34
In this they had to make a short scene from clips that they were given but they had to follow a script from the actual film. The student thought that it went well if he was just to focus on the way in which he cut the clips and followed the script. The clips themselves were difficult to do anything with because they had poor sound and that the acting was a bit of a problem some of the time. He managed well with the clips if you don’t think about the sound which is difficult. Overall it went well and that in the future if they were to be given better clips it would have gone a lot better but because of problem somewhat out of my control it makes it seem not as good.
Scene 37
In this project they had to do the same as what we had to do with the Scene 34 which was to make a scene by following the script. This was again difficult because some of the script was not followed and the sound was still not very good and consistent. He thinks that the work was good but should of done a bit more cuts and listened out of the sound a bit more because it was not good sometimes listen to the awful sound. He should have also cut more of the last clip a bit more and used other clips but when he was editing it I felt like it worked well because it never brakes thought and that his would work well with the clips to focus on that certain character. Overall he does not think that this was his best work and that it could have been alot better but he felt that when he was editing it, it did not seem as bad as it was but next time he will learn to look over my work more and not rush things as much.
